Understanding Spot Prices
Spot prices represent the current market price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of a precious metal. They are set by trading on global commodity exchanges, primarily COMEX (New York) and the LBMA (London), and fluctuate continuously during market hours.
Market hours: Precious metals trade Sunday 6:00 PM ET through Friday 5:00 PM ET, with a daily settlement break from 5:00-6:00 PM ET. During the weekend closure, spot prices remain unchanged.
For Canadian collectors and stackers, the price in Canadian dollars matters most. The CAD price is determined by two factors: the underlying USD metal price and the USD/CAD exchange rate. This means Canadian gold prices can move even when the US dollar gold price stays flat, simply because the Canadian dollar strengthened or weakened.
Spot Price vs. Dealer Price
Bullion dealers sell coins and bars at a premium over spot. This premium covers minting costs, dealer margin, and supply/demand dynamics. Typical premiums for popular Canadian products:
- 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf: $3-6 CAD over spot (8-15%)
- 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf: $80-150 CAD over spot (2-4%)
- 10 oz Silver Bar: $15-30 CAD over spot per bar (4-8%)
- Pre-1967 Junk Silver: near or at melt value for common dates
When selling, you'll typically receive spot price or slightly below, depending on the product and dealer. Learn more about selling coins.
